Julie A. Ryan joined the USC Gould School of Law in 2010 as associate director of LL.M. Legal Writing and Advocacy. During the academic year 2011-12, she served as interim co-director of Legal Writing and Advocacy. In 2012, she was appointed assistant professor of Legal Writing and Advocacy and In 2015 she was appointed associate professor of lawyering skills. Prior to joining the faculty, Ryan was a transactional partner at Russ August & Kabat in Los Angeles and an adjunct professor of Legal Writing and Advocacy at USC Law. Ryan previously practiced with Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld and with Clifford Chance Rogers & Wells in Washington, D.C., in the field of cross-border finance, securities, and international mergers and acquisitions.
In addition to legal writing and advocacy, Ryan also teaches courses in contract drafting and advanced legal writing for transactional practice.
Ryan graduated summa cum laude and valedictorian of her class from Colorado State University. She received her J.D. cum laude from Georgetown University Law Center, where she was senior staff editor of Law and Policy in International Business and associate director of Georgetown Barristers’ Council. She is an active member of the California State Bar Corporations Committee.
