This course is taught by a full-time entertainment litigator and chair of DLA Piper Entertainment Practice. Students will be introduced to the role of studios, networks, music labels, talent agents, talent managers, transactional and litigation entertainment lawyers, banks and other financiers, the guilds (such as DGA, SAG-AFTRA,WGA, AFM, ASCAP, and BMI). The course will focus on legal issues that frequently arise in entertainment transactions and litigation, including contract issues and remedies, rights of publicity and of privacy, idea protection, artistic credit and billing, profit participations, and vertical integration.
There are no prerequisite requirements, although a background in copyright law and trademark law would be helpful. However, copyright law and trademark law will not be discussed in any depth in this course.
Because the guest lecturers are busy members of the entertainment industry, and because the professor is sometimes subject to forces beyond their control (i.e., judges), the course schedule is subject to change.
