Juris Doctor Degree Requirements

To receive the Juris Doctor degree from the USC Gould School of Law students must successfully complete all of the following:

  1. the first-year Curriculum including Legal Profession, Constitutional Law: Structure and Constitutional Law: Rights
  2. 88 total units
  3. 35 upper-division graded units
  4. Six semesters of full-time attendance
  5. the Upper-Division Writing Requirement
  6. the Practical Skills Course Requirement
  7. 65 units in "Regularly Scheduled Class Sessions"

Juris Doctor Learning Objectives

In accordance with the American Bar Association's Standard 302. Learning Outcomes, USC Gould School of Law follows this standard which provides that a law school shall establish learning outcomes that shall, at a minimum, include competency in the following:

  1. Knowledge and understanding of substantive and procedural law;
  2. Legal analysis and reasoning, legal research, problem-solving, and written and oral communication in the legal context;
  3. Exercise of proper professional and ethical responsibilities to clients and the legal system; and
  4. Other professional skills needed for competent and ethical participation as a member of the legal profession.
