Valerie Barreiro is a clinical assistant professor of law and the Director of the USC Intellectual Property and Technology Law Clinic. The Clinic provides free basic intellectual property legal assistance to artists, filmmakers, journalists, musicians, small businesses, non-profit organizations, innovators, independent developers and others who have limited resources for legal services. 
 
Prior to joining USC Gould, Prof. Barreiro was a Business Affairs executive and Vice President of Legal Affairs at NBCUniversal.  Prof. Barreiro structured, negotiated and drafted all key agreements relating to the development, production and exhibition of unscripted television programs, such as The Voice, and provided legal counsel to senior executives at the Universal Television Studio and the NBC Network.  
 
Prof. Barreiro joined NBC as media counsel in 2006.  In that role, she served as lead media counsel for the west coast Telemundo television stations and reviewed scripts and provided legal advice on developing news stories for various news programs, including NBC Nightly News and Today Show. 
 
Prof. Barreiro started her legal career in  the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office, where she tried more than 50 criminal cases.  Prof. Barreiro litigated numerous intellectual property cases at Weston & McElvain LLP in Los Angeles and also served as a deputy city attorney, negotiating the renewal of franchise agreements with cable operators Adelphia, Comcast, Cox and Time Warner on behalf of the City of Los Angeles.  
 
Prof. Barreiro is a graduate of the University of California, Hastings College of the Law where she was an editor of the Communications and Entertainment Law Journal.  She earned her undergraduate degree in political science from Loyola Marymount University.
