Zoom Pop-Up Session with Professors Sam Erman and Robert Rasmussen – The significance of recent retirement announcements of federal judges, and the appointment process

Feb 26, 2021 from 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

When a federal judge takes senior status, announcing their semi-retirement from the bench, the President of the US begins the process of choosing a successor. Federal judges in states including California, Michigan, New York and Ohio have made this announcement recently. The political implications are significant, and are heightened with retirement rumors about Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer.

Professor Sam Erman, a constitutional law expert who clerked for Supreme Court Justices John Paul Stevens and Anthony Kennedy, and US Court of Appeals Judge Merrick Garland, and Professor Robert Rasmussen, a former dean of the Gould School who interacted frequently with federal judges in that capacity, will discuss the process of appointing a federal judge, the role of federal judges in American democracy, and who President Biden might pick for the federal bench and SCOTUS.
