USC Village Grand Opening

On Thursday, August 17, thousands of students, their families, faculty, staff and members of the community will celebrate the opening of USC Village. The grand opening will take place at 11 a.m. with the Trojan marching band leading a procession of thousands into USC Village's Central Piazza, the new north center of campus more than an acre in size. (Please see below for event details.)

The creation of USC Village, with 1.25 million square feet of mixed-use space, is a historic milestone for Los Angeles in its bid to lead the nation in economic opportunity and forward-thinking development and planning. USC Village includes eight new residential colleges, adding as many as 2,700 student beds to the University Park Campus and increasing the number of students living in USC-owned housing by nearly 40 percent. At a cost of $700 million, USC Village is the largest development in the history of South Los Angeles and includes 103,000 square feet of retail space. In addition, USC Village will provide thousands of jobs, and more than $40 million in community benefits, including up to $20 million for an affordable housing fund managed by the city. Planning for USC Village included preserving and relocating iconic Fire Station 15 and building a new state-of-the-art fire station at the corner of Hoover and 30th Streets. The project supported more than 5,600 construction jobs and focused on community hires through a partnership with the city of Los Angeles and local unions.

Several of the businesses housed by USC Village are in partnership with USC alumni. These include Trejo's Tacos, Rance's Chicago Pizza, Sole Bicycles and URB-E Mobility Hub.

WHEN: The grand opening will take place at 11 a.m. on Aug. 17. At noon, USC President C. L. Max Nikias will unveil a towering bronze statue of Hecuba, Queen of Troy, accompanied by daytime fireworks. At 8 p.m., Chicano Batman, Javon Johnson, Atsuko Okatsuka and Jessica Sele kick off the 12th season of Visions and Voices, a university-wide arts and humanities initiative.

WHERE: USC Village, Jefferson Boulevard and Hoover Street. Note: Jefferson will be closed between Hoover Street and McClintock Avenue the day of the event.
