The Gay and Lesbian Law Union organized a team of about 15 law students that participated in the 22nd Annual AIDS Walk Los Angeles Oct. 15. Although USC Law students have participated informally in past years, this is the first time GLLU has formed an official team, which raised $860.

AIDS Walk Los AngelesGLLU member Chris Cianci, a 1L, said it was important that the law school formally participate in the event.

“It’s important to GLLU mostly to raise awareness about AIDS,” Cianci said. “It goes to show it’s not just a problem for gay people, but for everyone.”

The team, which included members of the Black Law Students Association and the Women’s Law Association, used e-mail and fliers to fundraise for the event. Proceeds benefited AIDS Project Los Angeles, which provides services, education and political activism, and other AIDS service organizations in L.A. County. The walk raised $3.76 million this year.

“Having other people donate who weren’t gay and lesbian or who weren’t necessarily members of GLLU was important,” Cianci said. “It was cool to have a lot of people involved to show their support.”
