“Freedom of Expression” Symposium to Feature Edward Snowden Via Livestream and Chuck D of Public Enemy

Edward Snowden will Livestream (via Google Hangout) at USC Law School on Saturday
 
Chuck D of Public Enemy will speak on “Rap and Repression,” on Sunday
 
WHAT/WHO: USC Gould School of Law is broadcasting a live, virtual interview with Edward Snowden as part of a USC-UC Irvine two-day symposium “What Cannot Be Said, Freedom of Expression in a Changing World.” Barton Gellman, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and journalist, will interview Snowden, the former National Security Agency contractor accused of leaking government secrets to a variety of publications.
Chuck D of Public Enemy will speak on “Rap and Repression” with USC Gould Prof. Jody Armour on Sunday. Public Enemy is considered the quintessential political rap group, and their 1987 album “It Takes a Nation” is widely considered among the greatest albums in history. Chuck D will speak alongside Armour and discuss many of Public Enemy’s songs and their meanings.
The two-day event is timed to coincide with the first anniversary of the Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris andfeatures an in-depth examination of freedom of expression through various activities including stand-up comedy, musical artistry, presentations and Q&A.
Other confirmed speakers and performers on Sunday include: Sherman Jackson (Chair of USC Islamic Thought and Culture), Krista Tippet (NPR’s On Being), Laila Lalami (UC Riverside), Sharon Brous (Rabbi), Azhar Usman (Comedian), and Steve Mumford (Artist).
WHEN: Snowden’s interview will take place on Saturday, Jan. 23 from 10:30 a.m. to noon at USC Gould School of Law, Room 3, 699 Exposition, Los Angeles, 90089
Chuck D. will speak on Sunday, Jan. 24 at 1:30 p.m.  in USC’s Ronald Tutor Campus Center, Ballroom
COST: This event is free and open to the public.
