Nov. 21 event features ethics updates for lawyers

Attorneys, trust officers, underwriters and other trust and estate planning professionals are invited to USC Law’s 34th annual Trust and Estate Conference Friday, Nov. 21, at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles.

Trust & Estate ConferenceFormerly called the Probate and Trust Conference, the event teaches practical and realistic solutions to the everyday—and unexpected—problems encountered in estate planning, trust administration, probate, trust and estate litigation, substantive law, client relationships and law practice economics.

The conference features a session on “New Preparer and Appraiser Penalties” by Jeffrey C. De Francisco and Valerie Merritt, partners at the Pasadena law firm Calleton, Merritt, De Francisco & Real-Salas, LLP. The session will examine the Pension Protection Act of 2006, increased exposure to the penalties of trust and estate attorneys, and the IRS’ and practitioners’ responses to the law.

Kenneth A. Feinfield, managing director and chief fiduciary officer of Wilmington Trust FSB; and Philip J. Hayes, legacy planning specialist with Bessemer Trust, will present “Trusts: Where they sit matters quite a bit,” surveying the trust administration landscape.

A luncheon will feature “Updates to Ethical Issues for Trust and Estate Lawyers,” presented by Margaret G. Lodise, partner of Sacks Glazier Franklin & Lodise LLP.

Other presenters include Terrence M. Franklin and Robert N. Sacks, partners of Sacks, Glazier, Franklin & Lodise; Andrew M. Katzenstein, partner in the personal planning department of Proskauer Rose’s Los Angeles office; David Lane, in private practice in Encino, Calif., and Nicole M. Pearl, partner in McDermott Will & Emery LLP.

Students may sign up for this conference for a discounted rate of $100. To register, or download a brochure for more information, click here.
