Marshall B. Grossman Mentorship Program

USC Gould School of Law

The USC Gould Marshall B. Grossman Mentorship Program is a supportive and informal mentorship initiative that connects USC Gould JD alumni with JD students. Honoring its namesake's commitment to philanthropy, the program is endowed by Marshall B. Grossman's family, sustaining the program in perpetuity.

The program provides alumni the opportunity to give back to their law school community and provides students invaluable personalized guidance from experienced legal professionals.

USC Gould Career Services Office facilitates the mentorship matching and hosts events to bring students and alumni together. However, reflective of Grossman's organic approach, the mentor/mentee relationship is encouraged to be self-guided.

About the Namesake

Marshall B. Grossman JD ’64 (1939 – 2023) was known by peers and colleagues for his sharp lawyering skills and keen ability to guide others in their professional journeys within the legal field.

Throughout his 55 years of practicing law, he worked at three law firms, retiring from Orrick, Herrington, and Sutcliffe in 2019. Grossman prosecuted as well as defended major commercial litigation. Having represented clients throughout the U.S., he was admitted to practice in numerous state and federal courts.

Whether reminding mentees to polish their shoes before entering the presence of a judge or his fellow Gould alumni of the importance of giving back, Grossman centered service and leadership in everything he did. The USC Gould Marshall B. Grossman Mentor Program honors his values of philanthropy and mentorship.

“I always believed that a true professional gives back to his or her calling much more than has been received. As a lawyer, I feel that I have been entrusted with the responsibility of serving as an example to the community at large and to those who follow me in my career. I always enjoyed mentoring younger lawyers and have been grateful for what I have learned from them. If I don’t share my knowledge and abilities, then I fail to repay the debts to those who came before me who extended help to me along the way.”
