James Robert Quick teaches Cybersecurity and Cyber Crime at USC Gould School of Law, bringing to the classroom three decades spent inside the cybersecurity machine itself, at Cisco, EY, PwC, and Netscape, before he ever examined it as a lawyer. He holds an LLB (Hons) from the University of London, an LLM from USC Gould, a second LLM in Digital Law and Technology from the Université Catholique de Lyon, and a PhD in Philosophy from Duquesne University; he is a California-licensed attorney (SBN 360892) and a CISSP. He currently serves as General Counsel of Autharva, Inc., an AI identity-governance startup. There, the doctrinal questions he examines as an academic (jurisdiction, attribution, and the collapse of “authorization” in an agentic AI landscape), arrive as live client problems rather than hypotheticals. His scholarship traces how territorially grounded legal architectures buckle under digitally networked infrastructure. Students can expect a professor who spent 30 years inside the machine that the law struggles to catch up to, thinking like an engineer, but arguing like a lawyer.
