With 2016 on the horizon, we took some time to reflect on 2015, as we welcomed a new dean, bade farewell to the class of 2015, and congratulated the 2015 grads who passed the bar. Here are some 2015 highlights (in chronological order):
  • “The Trojan ‘Fight On’ spirit is now part of our DNA,” speaker Hiroyuki Takahashi, LLM ‘15 told the crowd gathered for Gould’s 2015 commencement ceremony on May 15. USC Gould sent more than 400 graduates into the world that day.
  • USC Provost Michael Quick appointed USC Gould Professor Camille Rich as an associate provost to help lead oversight and coordination of campus-wide diversity and inclusion efforts.  “Campus climate is critical,” she said.  “We must continue to strive to find new ways to make all members of the Trojan Family feel welcome, included, respected and heard.”
  • In July, we officially welcomed our new dean, Andrew Guzman, who was off to a running start.
  • The Trojan Marching Band hailed our incoming students at Orientation. The Gould Class of 2018 entered with a median LSAT of 166 and GPA of 3.76. About 4,245 applicants vied for the 192 slots. “You are a diverse class, and each of you brings something very special to the table,” said Associate Dean and Dean of Admissions Chloe Reid.
  • Just four weeks into the academic year, USC Gould’s Post-Conviction Justice Project celebrated several significant victories. Students — and a recent graduate — successfully argued for a sentence reduction and parole grants for four deserving clients. PCJP students also researched and drafted a juvenile justice bill signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown on September 1.
  • “This film is deeply Gould,” said USC Gould Dean Andrew Guzman, as he introduced a documentary focused on the work and life of Gould Professor Jody Armour to USC students and parents gathered for Trojan Family Weekend. “It connects our work as a law school with Jody’s story and with today’s issues such as Black Lives Matter, mass incarceration and police brutality,” Guzman said.
  • USC Gould School of Law’s Class of 2015 graduates celebrated their crowning achievement in December when they were sworn in as attorneys to the California state and federal bars. USC Gould graduates posted a bar passage rate of 87 percent –unofficially the second highest of those law schools providing results in California, behind Stanford Law School. The increase comes despite a significant average decrease in passage among California exam-takers this year.
