Matthew G. Phy is a recent graduate of the USC Gould School of Law’s online Master of Studies in Law program, having earned his MSL with a graduate certificate in Business Law in December 2024. He currently serves as director of communications for a member of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors.

What made you pursue the Online MSL in particular?  Why at USC Gould School of Law?

After working extensively in government and writing many pieces of legislation and policy, I wanted to become more fluent in the law. Working in San Diego, I knew the most practical way to obtain my MSL would be online. The USC Gould School of Law’s prestigious reputation and program caught my eye when researching programs across the country. Reading through the various courses and areas of focus, I found myself interested in every single one.

What was your experience balancing your Online MSL coursework with your professional and personal commitments?  What strategies helped you to succeed?

Balancing my coursework, professional and personal commitments wasn’t always easy. However, I think it forces you to carefully prioritize tasks or commitments, and plan accordingly. It keeps you organized because you must be able to succeed in each area. When starting the program, I told myself that I would commit to still going out and doing fun activities or trips, even while I was in school. It was important that I set aside time to enjoy life and destress to keep a healthy balance.

What is your most memorable experience or key learning takeaway from your studies at USC Gould?

I think one of the most memorable experiences was presenting on a landmark legal case in our LAW 520: Introduction to U.S. Legal System class with Professor Anitha Cadambi. It was a challenging but fun experience where we had to become experts in a case, present to the class and answer questions from the professor using the Socratic Method. My key learning takeaway was being comfortable with the “gray” in law — not everything is black and white. We often try to separate or argue issues like this in our daily lives but my courses at USC Gould challenged me to think differently and accept that there isn’t always a clear answer.

Looking back, what aspects of the program provided you with the most unexpected value?

Learning from professors with extensive experience was valuable but it was even more valuable when they used real examples from their own work or from current events. Being able to apply the law to current events and situations really helped me understand the material in a more meaningful way.

How has your Online MSL given you an advantage in your career?

The Online MSL program has provided me with not only a more thorough knowledge of the law, but it has sharpened my skills in writing and communication. I now find myself considering and arguing all angles of issues which has been beneficial in my daily work. I think my MSL will continue to give me an advantage in all future positions due to its applicability to any and all industries. Legal situations and issues are ever-present in my job and having the knowledge and training to more deeply understand them is invaluable.

What advice would you give to prospective students who are interested in pursuing their MSL?

Put in 100% into the coursework, ask questions, and make meaningful connections with classmates and professors. The MSL program at USC and network are extremely special and unique.

What sparked your interest in learning about law?

I’ve always had a deep interest in the law but never felt that practicing law was something that I wanted to do. However, having the chance to go to law school for the MSL and learn about it was better than I had imagined. I gained the knowledge and skills that I sought and can now apply that to my daily work and life.

What relationships or connections formed during the program have proven most valuable to you?

The relationships with the professors and classmates are key. You are surrounded by the most brilliant and talented people. Take advantage of that and grow your network.
