Yanara Zenteno (Portero) graduated from the USC Gould School of Law’s online Master of Studies in Law program in December 2021. She currently works as USC’s director of talent acquisition for executive, professional, and specialty recruitment.

What made you pursue the Online MSL? Why at USC Gould School of Law?

As someone who began my career in legal and compliance and later transitioned into Human Resources, I found myself craving a deeper understanding of how the two intersect, particularly in the space of talent acquisition. The Online Master of Studies in Law (MSL) at USC Gould School of Law was the perfect fit because it allowed me to build on my existing foundation in law while directly applying that knowledge to my work in HR. As a proud Trojan already working at USC, it felt like a full-circle moment to return to my roots in law through one of the university’s most prestigious schools. The program’s emphasis on Human Resources Law and Compliance aligned seamlessly with my professional goals and personal interests.

What was your experience balancing your Online MSL coursework with your professional and personal commitments? What strategies helped you to succeed?

Balancing the MSL program with a full-time leadership role and life outside of work definitely required intention, but the structure of the program made it very manageable. The consistent cadence of discussion boards and assignment due dates allowed me to plan ahead and carve out dedicated time, usually Saturdays, to stay on top of everything. I appreciated that flexibility. I treated coursework like an important standing appointment on my calendar, and because the content was so relevant to my daily work, it often felt more energizing than draining.

What is your most memorable experience or key learning takeaway from your studies at USC Gould?

One of the most rewarding aspects of the program was getting to collaborate with other professionals across industries and backgrounds during group simulations and class projects. I especially valued how the curriculum connected to real-life challenges I was seeing in our HR organization and across higher education. I came away with both strategic insight and tactical knowledge that I could bring back to my team. The program made me a more thoughtful partner to the departments I support at USC and reaffirmed my commitment to upholding fairness and accountability in all hiring practices.

Looking back, what aspects of the program provided you with the most unexpected value?

While I knew the program would be academically rigorous, I didn’t expect just how practical and immediately applicable the coursework would be. Classes like Employment Dispute Mediation offered a new lens through which to approach conflict resolution, decision-making, and partnership — skills that are invaluable in talent acquisition, especially when working across executive leadership, legal counsel, and hiring managers. The HR Law and Compliance focus deepened my confidence in navigating sensitive employment issues, beyond just knowing the law. I learned how to apply it in a way that protects both the institution and the people who work here.

How has your Online MSL given you an advantage in your career?

The MSL has given me a greater level of credibility and influence in my work. Since starting the program, I’ve been promoted to director of talent acquisition, overseeing executive, professional, and specialty recruitment under the University of Southern California’s central HR umbrella. I can confidently say the program helped elevate my perspective, sharpen my judgment and broaden the scope of conversations I’m invited into. Looking ahead, I’m focused on deepening my impact and continuing to shape policies, practices and strategies that drive fairness, integrity and long-term success in hiring. The MSL helped me find the perfect intersection of my legal foundation and passion for HR, and that alignment continues to guide my path forward.

What advice would you give to prospective students who are interested in pursuing their MSL?

Stay engaged with your professors and classmates because those connections can be just as valuable as the coursework itself. Also, apply what you’re learning in real time. If you work in HR, compliance or leadership, take the opportunity to bring course concepts into your daily responsibilities.

What sparked your interest in learning about law?

My role often intersects with legal considerations, particularly in hiring practices, compliance and policy implementation. I wanted to strengthen my ability to make informed decisions while mitigating risks and ensuring best practices.

What relationships or connections formed during the program have proven most valuable to you?

The connections I made with professors and classmates have been incredibly meaningful. Engaging with professionals from a wide range of industries broadened my perspective on how legal concepts apply across different business sectors. These relationships have not only enriched my learning experience but also created a trusted network of colleagues I can reach out to for insights, advice or simply to exchange ideas.
