The campuses of three USC-area elementary schools are a touch more picturesque thanks to a day of manual labor by more than 200 USC Law students.

Orientation Service Project 2010 - New DesignsAs part of the annual Orientation Service Project, students from the Class of 2013, along with a handful of 2L mentors, participated in three beautification projects Aug. 19: mural painting at The Dr. Theodore T. Alexander Science School, mural painting at 32nd Street Magnet School, and mural painting and garden planting at New Designs Charter School. Each campus is within a 15-minute walk from USC Law.

Braving the late-summer heat, the students spent the day improving the campuses while also getting to know their new classmates prior to the start of classes Aug. 23.

The Orientation Service Project was launched five years ago by the student-run Community Service Committee and is a collaborative effort between the Offices of Public Service and Student Affairs.

"Through this project, students have an opportunity to get a glimpse of the strong bond USC has with the surrounding community," said Malissa Barnwell-Scott, acting director of the Office of Public Service. "This is also a wonderful opportunity to spend quality time with fellow classmates, Peer Mentors, and law school staff and faculty."
