Two USC Law neighborhood outreach programs have been selected for funding by the USC Neighborhood Outreach (UNO) Board and Grants Committee.

USC Street Law was designated a 2010-2011 UNO Signature Program. The program provides a practical education covering law, democracy and human rights for children and families living in USC's immediate neighborhoods. Each year approximately 60 law students teach legal concepts and expose local middle and high school students to higher education and the legal profession while visiting their campuses three to four times a semester. The award of “Signature” status is notable. Signature programs are those that best exemplify USC’s commitment to its neighborhood.

“This is quite an honor for our students and our Office of Public Service,” says Dean Robert K. Rasmussen. “Signature status also means the university has committed to three years of annual funding.”

USC Law’s Legal Ambassadors Program, a joint community service project of the Black Law Students Association and Latino Law Students Association, also received funding. The service program was launched in the 2009-10 school year. Legal Ambassadors teaches local middle school students about relevant legal topics. Through the use of current events, Legal Ambassadors encourages these students to bolster their critical thinking skills while modeling positive black and Latino working and social relationships. -Maria Iacobo
