Federal Tax Officials Highlight USC Law’s 2009 Tax Institute

Hochman, Solomon will deliver keynotes at this week’s annual event


WHAT: The USC Gould School of Law is hosting the 2009 Tax Institute, a three-day event that will examine a variety of issues and trends facing the tax industry. Topics include tax issues for troubled companies, salvaging interest deductions, and estate planning in a low interest rate environment.

WHO: Assistant Attorney General Nathan J. Hochman, from the Tax Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, and Eric Solomon, Assistant Secretary, Tax Policy, at the U.S. Department of the Treasury will give keynote addresses Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, respectively. Hochman will speak on “Tax Enforcement in an Uncertain World,” while Solomon’s talk is titled “The Once and Future Treasury Office of Tax Policy.”

Additional speakers of note include: Lawrence B. Gibbs, a former IRS Commissioner; Mark J. Silverman, of Steptoe & Johnson LLP; Blake D. Rubin, of McDermott Will & Emery LLP; and Jeffrey N. Pennell, from the Emory University School of Law. 

WHEN: Monday, Jan. 26, through Wednesday, Jan. 28.

WHERE: Sheraton Los Angeles Downtown Hotel, 711 South Hope Street, Los Angeles, CA 90017.

COST: Free for the media. Cost is $575 per day for the general public ($930 for any two days; $1,125 for all three days). Students pay $100 per day ($300 for all three days) for the institute.
