On July 1, USC Gould Professor Jordan Barry stepped into a new role as Vice Dean for Faculty and Academic Affairs. Get to know him and his vision for serving the Gould community.

What excites you most about this leadership role?

I became a law professor because I believe deeply in the rule of law and in legal education. For me, the attraction of being Vice Dean is that I get more opportunities to strengthen the USC Gould School of Law. I think it’s already a terrific institution that does a lot of good for our students and for the world in general.  But it didn’t get that way by accident. It was due to the efforts of scores of people who came before me and built up the institution over time. I’m excited to contribute to that great project, and to work with our wonderful new Dean, Franita Tolson.

What goals do you hope to accomplish?

I think people do their best work when they feel that people appreciate their contributions. USC has a kind and supportive culture, and I want to help nurture and preserve that, especially coming off of the isolation of the pandemic. I also want to help make sure that our students can begin their careers on the right foot, including passing the bar and finding good jobs. We already do well in these areas, but I think they’re all so important.

Is there anything in particular you want the Gould community to know about your role?

I am here to help!  If there’s something you want to talk to me about, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
