Nancy Iredale, a partner in the international law firm of Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker LLP, has been appointed chair of the 2007 USC Law Tax Institute.
Ms. Iredale, who served as the chair of her firm’s tax department for 10 years, has been a member of the planning committee for the USC Law Tax Institute since 1988. She was named chair by USC Gould School of Law Dean
“We are delighted and very fortunate to have someone of Nancy’s caliber serve as chair of the Tax Institute,” Dean McCaffery said. “She is a talented attorney with extraordinary expertise in a wide range of issues related to tax. I’m confident the Tax Institute will continue to grow and thrive under her leadership.”
The USC Law Tax Institute, an annual three-day conference held in January, brings together the nation’s leading authorities on tax law to discuss a variety of pressing issues, such as current legislative developments, corporate tax strategies, ethical dilemmas facing tax lawyers, tax compliance and enforcement, real estate, partnership and individual tax issues, and estate and trust matters.
Designed to provide a forum for the exchange of information, perspectives and strategies, the Institute is one of the most prominent tax conferences in the nation.
“I was thrilled when Ed McCaffery asked me to lead the 2007 USC Gould School of Law Tax Institute,” Ms. Iredale said. “For more than 30 years, the tax practitioner community and I have benefited from the Institute. Now I have the opportunity to return the favor, both for the Institute and the community.”
Ms. Iredale has provided tax advice to international and domestic clients in all types of commercial transactions as well as structuring advice and tax opinion letters in numerous tax-free and taxable merger and acquisition transactions. She has performed tax due diligence and has negotiated reductions in purchase price to reflect contingent tax liabilities in target companies.
In addition, Ms. Iredale has litigated cases in numerous forums and has been especially successful in obtaining summary adjudication for clients in tax controversies. She has tried and/or settled federal and California civil and criminal tax cases and has been cited by her peers as one of the state’s most prominent tax litigators.
Ms. Iredale’s preeminence was recognized by the Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service, who appointed her to his Advisory Group (“CAG”). She also is a fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel and was presented the V. Judson Klein Award as the outstanding tax lawyer in the state of California. She was elected as the first woman president of the Jonathan Club and often has served as a speaker on resolving controversies with taxing authorities. Ms. Iredale was named by Law & Politics Media as one of the “Top 50 Female Super Lawyers” and was listed as a “Super Lawyer 2006” for the field of tax law in Los Angeles magazine.
Ms. Iredale received her J.D. from Yale Law School, where she published in the Review of Law and Social Action and was a member of the Board of Governors of Yale Legislative Services. Beginning her tax career in Washington, D.C., she served as tax counsel to Sen. William Brock on the Senate Finance Committee while the committee was writing the Tax Reform Act of 1976.
