Celebrated scholar to keynote commencement

Erwin Chemerinsky, Constitutional law and federal civil procedure expert, to speak May 16

Noted constitutional law scholar Erwin Chemerinsky will present the keynote address at the USC Law commencement ceremony Friday, May 16. A former USC Law faculty member for 21 years, Chemerinsky is a professor at Duke Law School and has been named founding dean of the Donald Bren School of Law at University of California, Irvine, effective July 1, 2008.

The 2008 commencement ceremony will begin at 3:30 p.m. in McCarthy Quad on the USC campus, near the Von KleinSmid Center, with a reception to follow in the same location. In a change from previous years, the ceremony will be held on the same day as USC’s 125th commencement ceremony, which begins at 9 a.m.

Chemerinsky has served as the Alston & Bird Professor of Law and Political Science at Duke Law School since 2004. He previously was the Sydney M. Irmas Professor of Public Interest Law, Legal Ethics and Political Science at USC Law and director of the USC Center for Communications Law and Policy. Chemerinsky also was a professor at DePaul College of Law and practiced as a trial attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice and at Dobrovir, Oakes & Gebhart in Washington, D.C.

Chemerinsky is the author of Federal Jurisdiction (2007), Constitutional Law: Principles and Policies (2006), Constitutional Law (2005), and Interpreting the Constitution (1987). He also has authored more than 100 law review articles that have appeared in a number of journals, such as Harvard Law Review, Stanford Law Review and Yale Law Journal.
