USC Gould School of Law Dean Edward J. McCaffery will present the keynote address at the 2007 USC Law Tax Institute, Jan. 22 to 24, 2007.
McCaffery – an internationally recognized scholar whose expertise includes tax policy, tax structures and public finance theory – will present “A look into the future of estate tax reform” at 12 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel.
The institute also features keynote addresses by Lindy L. Paull, former chief of staff, U.S. Congress Joint Committee on Taxation; and Donald L. Korb, chief counsel for the Internal Revenue Service, who will also present a session on tax court litigation.
Among current topics that will be featured at the institute are changes in ownership rules under Prop. 13, developments in like-kind exchanges, navigating changes in the bankruptcy code, and updates on retirement planning and charitable giving. Returning to the institute by popular demand is Professor Jeffrey N. Pennell, Emory University School of Law, who will remotely present “Current Developments in Estate Planning.” Other top speakers include Blake Rubin, Arnold & Porter, on partnership and real estate tax; and Mark J. Silverman, Steptoe & Johnson, on corporate taxation.
Nancy Iredale, partner in the international law firm of Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker LLP, recently was appointed chair of the institute. Iredale is the chair of her firm’s tax department and has been a member of the planning committee for the USC Law Tax Institute since 1988. Dean McCaffery, who holds the Carl Mason Franklin Chair in Law, Economics and Political Science at USC Law, served as chair of the institute from 1997 to 2006.
