Chief Counsel visits USC campus to promote nationwide jobs
Internal Revenue Service Chief Counsel Donald L. Korb stopped by a USC Law Career Services Office workshop Oct. 2 in his nationwide search for the best and brightest legal minds to join his team.

Korb, joined by Benjamin Duncan, head of the Office of Chief Counsel’s L.A. branch, told students they would gain tremendous experience immediately out of law school.

“We get people right into the courtroom representing the government,” Korb said. “You have your own docket, and you’ll be dealing with some of the nation’s top tax lawyers.”

The chief counsel is looking to hire recent J.D. and LL.M. graduates to fill entry-level positions in 49 field offices across the country and the IRS national office in Washington, D.C. New attorneys are asked to commit to three years of employment. There are also summer and externship positions available for first- and second-year students.

Korb, who began his career more than 30 years ago with the chief counsel’s office, described the job as offering more responsibility earlier in one’s career than traditional firm jobs or even positions with other branches of government. New attorneys are in court within a month, he said. They try cases, negotiate settlements, and work on rulings and regulations.

“You become more valuable earlier in your career,” Korb noted.

He also emphasized that the job presents a chance to experience life in a different part of the country. The Office of Chief Counsel also has four Southern California offices – downtown L.A., Long Beach, Laguna Niguel and San Diego.

For more information, visit the IRS Office of Chief Counsel careers web site, download a brochure, or pick one up in the USC Law Career Services Office, Room 110. A recruiting video also is available from CSO and can be found in parts one and two on YouTube.
