Richard A. Paez to visit USC Law Oct. 30

— By Lori Craig

The Honorable Richard A. Paez, judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit, will speak at USC Law during a brown bag lunch on Tuesday, Oct. 30, from 12:25 to 1:15 p.m. in Room 7.

Paez will speak to students about post-graduation judicial clerkships and judicial externships. He also will take questions from students about the clerking application process and experience.

Paez, who delivered the commencement address to the USC Law Class of 2002, was appointed to the Court of Appeals by President Bill Clinton in 1999 and was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in March 2000. Since his elevation to the 9th Circuit, he has joined the majority opinion in the copyright infringement case against Napster and written the majority decision in the recent challenge to California's three-strikes law.

Prior to joining the 9th Circuit, Paez served as a judge for six years in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California and for 13 years in Los Angeles Municipal Court. He was the first Mexican-American to sit on the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles.

A graduate of Brigham Young University, Paez received his J.D. in 1972 from the University of California, Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law and began a 10-year career in public service. He practiced with California Rural League Assistance, the Western Center on Law and Poverty, and the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles.

The Board of Councilors Select Committee on Federal Judicial Clerkships is hosting the event, and USC Law alumnus David Walsh ’85, chair of the committee and a former clerk, will attend. Professor Jean Rosenbluth '93, director of legal writing and advocacy and chair of the faculty Clerkship Committee, will introduce Judge Paez.

Lunch will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. To RSVP, contact the USC Law Events Office at 213-740-3841.
