Organizers of the 17th Annual USC Public Interest Law Foundation Auction on March 1 hope the law school community will make the event as successful as last year’s, which set a new standard for supporting students’ public interest work.

Funds raised by the auction – whether through ticket sales, bids or donations – will support 25 PILF summer grants for first- and second-year students working in the public interest sector. Last year, the auction raised more than $50,000, and this year, PILF would like to increase the size of its summer grants.

“It’s pretty exciting to participate in the auction, because it is the main source of funding for summer grants and allows a lot of students to take non-paying public interest positions and really help the community,” said 2L Jean Doherty, who co-chairs the auction with 2Ls Patricia Eberwine and Asha Subas.

“We are trying to outdo previous years,” Doherty said. “It’s a big goal, but so far we’ve had phenomenal faculty and student participation, and we have some great items up for bid that should help us get there.”

Those items include: box seats to a Lakers game, a weekend at a Palm Springs resort, a game of “Trivial Pursuit” with a number of USC Law librarians, and “Scotch and Sklar” – an event donated by the Southern California Law Review that includes a bottle of scotch and an evening of conversation with 3L Jeff Sklar. Due to the auction’s “Casino Royale” theme, there are also a number of celebrity- and movie-centered items, including props from the Ashton Kutcher show “Punk’d” and a signed script of the movie “Legally Blonde.”

Doors to the auction open at 6 p.m. and dinner will be served. 2L Grace Hwa will sing a selection of oldies, classics and jazz songs before the live auction starts at 7:15 p.m. Tickets are still available and may be purchased at the door or during lunchtime outside the Law Café: $15 for students and $20 for non-students.
