Students looking to find their niche in one of the many organizations at USC Gould attended the Student Bar Association’s (SBA) Student Organization Fair recently. Dozens of organizations packed Crocker Plaza with current members offering literature and answering questions of prospective members.

SBA President Dan Arriola '14 talks to students about
the organizations present at the involvement fair.

SBA President Dan Arriola '14 sat at his organization’s table, assisting students in finding the right organizations that suited their interests. He says he was pleased to see such a great turnout for the event, especially for first-year students.

“It’s really great to see a lot of 1Ls come out to the fair, we really need them to get involved,” Arriola said. “Whether they know it or not, they are the future of our school.”

Barrett Hammond ’15 of the Space Law Society said his organization had many rewarding opportunities available for interested students.

“It’s a lot of fun, we have really great speakers,” Hammond said. ” It’s a great opportunity to learn about emerging areas of law.”

Hammond said Space Law Society members would have the opportunity to take part in the Manfred Lachs Moot Court Competition at Georgetown. Winners will argue in front of three sitting members of the International Court of Justice. Even members who are not in the competition will have the opportunity to be on the team and learn valuable skills.

“We will be writing briefs and 1Ls can get on the home team,” Hammond said. “That would be great practice for them if they are interested in being on the Hale Moot Court honors team as a 2L.”

The Business Law Society invited students to join them for their events and a chance to learn how aspects of business are pertinent to practicing law. Veronica Cook ‘15, co-president of the organization said students could look forward to many interesting learning and networking opportunities.

“Even if you don’t plan to practice business law, there is always something to learn,” Cook said. “Our panels introduce students to business law and show them how business intersects with the law.”

Cook says that the Business Law Society will be partnering with the Entertainment Law Society on Sept. 26 for an event on entertainment mergers and acquisitions, featuring a guest speaker from Marvel Entertainment.

“There will be great food and  well known speakers,” Cook said.

USC Gould also offers students the opportunity to join its chapter of Phi Alpha Delta, a national law fraternity dedicated to advancing integrity, compassion and courage through service to the school, the community and fellow students.

Greg Lush’15, justice of the fraternity, says that students would enjoy what the fraternity has to offer.

“We want to make the law school fun,” Lush said. “We are trying to connect with other schools nationally and we offer lots of Bar prep discounts, and discounts on health and auto insurance as well.”
