Law students from across the globe will receive an introduction to the U.S. legal system through USC Law’s Summer Law and English Program.

Designed for Master of Laws (LL.M.) students, the four-week program also incorporates courses in legal English and offers students a sense of professors’ expectations at American law schools. The program, in its third year at USC Law, will allow the 67 attendees from a dozen different countries become familiar with the life of a Los Angeles LL.M. student.

“In three short years, enrollment in our Summer Law & English program has tripled,” says Deborah Call, associate dean of Graduate and International Programs. “While the majority of our summer students stay for our LLM program, a third go on to other top law schools’ programs.  They are great ambassadors for us and continue to ‘spread the word’ about their rewarding education at USC Law.”

LLM studentsThe students – who include attorneys, judges, business professionals and government officials from countries such as Japan, Korea and Egypt – will attend courses at USC Law beginning July 10. Their introduction to various areas of U.S. law will include such subjects as antitrust law, internet law, legal writing, property law and U.S. courts and jury trials.

The English sessions, provided by USC’s Rossier School of Education Language Academy, are customized to complement the law curriculum, including legal vocabulary, presentation and negotiation skills.

Rounding out the students’ first U.S. law school experience will be special weekly activities, and field trips to educational and cultural sites in L.A. Students will tour a courthouse and a law firm, visit the Getty Museum and attend a Dodgers baseball game.

“The program gives students an opportunity to use conversational English and allows them to explore American culture,” says Misa Shimotsu, associate director of Graduate and International Programs. “We pack whatever we can into four weeks – we try to get them to see L.A.”
