Daniel Petrocelli, attorney for the former president and CEO of Enron, will give the keynote talk, "Perspectives from Inside the Enron Trial," at the USC Gould School of Law’s Institute for Corporate Counsel.
Sponsored by USC Law, the Los Angeles County Bar Association Corporate Law Departments Section, and the Institute for Corporate Counsel, a separate nonprofit entity, the two-day event takes place on Dec. 4 and 5.
Now in its 25th year, the Institute for Corporate Counsel provides in-depth legal education from professionals with breadth of knowledge and usable, how-to advice. More than 700 professionals are expected to attend the networking opportunity.
The event kicks off at the Omni Los Angeles Hotel on Monday, Dec. 4, with a dinner in which the 2006 Outstanding Corporate Counsel Award will be presented to Michael J. Downer of Capital Research and Management Company. Downer has served as chairman of both the SEC Rules Committee and Compliance Committee of the Investment Company Institute, the national trade association for the mutual fund industry.
“Michael Downer’s contributions and commitment to the practice of law and public service make him well-deserving of this honor,” said Leeanna Izuel, assistant dean of USC Law’s Continuing Legal Education.
On Tuesday, Dec. 5, the Institute for Corporate Counsel Institute provides top-notch legal education at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel. The day-long event will feature general sessions in the morning providing updates on employment law issues, proxy season tips and high stakes litigation, and concurrent sessions in the afternoon on labor, employment and litigation issues, corporate compliance issues and IP and other risk management issues – allowing lawyers to tailor the learning experience to meet individual needs.
“Our speakers are hand-picked for their knowledge and usable, how-to advice,” said Izuel. “Nowhere else will attorneys get so much practical advice from so many corporate professionals on the issues dealt with every day.”
Keynote speaker Petrocelli, a partner at O'Melveny & Myers in Century City, represented Skilling in a four-month criminal trial in Houston, Texas. He will share his perspectives from that experience. Petrocelli has a national trial practice representing clients in major litigation in entertainment, intellectual property, unfair competition, business torts, securities, employment law, and criminal defense matters.
Petrocelli is one of the many attorneys who will offer practical advice and a look at the issues relevant to in-house attorneys and those counseling in-house attorneys. Among others, James Lichtman, senior vice president of NBC Universal Television Group, will discuss upcoming intellectual property challenges; John Sullivan, president of the Civil Justice Association of California, will talk about high-stakes litigation; and Aimee Weisner, general counsel of Advanced Medical Optics, will discuss what to expect this proxy season.
