USC Gould School of Law recently completed its inaugural Global Justice for Atrocities Study Tour, a 10-day academic program that took eight students to key European destinations to study the development of international criminal law. Led by founding Executive Director Professor Hannah Garry and Associate Director Ann Strimov Durbin through the Donna and Spencer Gilbert Global Justice & Human Rights Center, the tour included visits to Auschwitz-Birkenau, the Plaszow Memorial Site and Courtroom 600 in Nuremberg, where students examined the historical foundations of international criminal accountability through site visits and instruction from leading scholars.

The study tour is one of the educational opportunities offered through the Gilbert Center. Based at USC Gould, the Center engages students, scholars and practitioners in interdisciplinary education, research and projects that advance human rights and justice. Its work focuses on strengthening international law and institutions related to atrocity prevention and accountability, refugee rights and transitional justice.

Dean Franita Tolson joined the group in Krakow during the tour, while the visit to Nuremberg included attendance at the opening ceremony of the Nuremberg Academy’s Moot Court, where Garry served as a judge.

The program was made possible through the generosity of Donna Gilbert and her gift establishing the Donna and Spencer Gilbert Global Justice & Human Rights Center, and was held in partnership with Creighton University’s N2H program and its affiliated educators.
