USC Gould School of Law Professor Bernadette Atuahene’s article, “A Theory of Stategraft,” is one of the two recipients of the Law and Society Association’s 2024 Article Award. The article was published in the NYU Law Review in 2023 and the award was presented on June 6 at LSA’s 2024 Annual Meeting in Denver.
“For a dyed-in-the-wool law and society scholar like myself, winning this award was an honor and a treasure,” said Professor Atuahene. “It feels good to be recognized by a group of scholars that you hold in such high esteem.”
Every summer, LSA honors leading international scholars for their groundbreaking publications and contributions to the study of law and society. According to the LSA, Atuahene’s paper “builds a theory of Stategraft to define and interrogate what happens when the state takes property from individuals in violation of state laws and human rights.”
“‘A Theory of Stategraft’ deftly applies theoretical innovation to social problems.” Professor Atuahene’s article has “impressive theoretical and practical applications in the area of focus that does much to illuminate other significant issues of law and society as well.” The LSA further noted that the paper, with its wide scope, “has the potential to define the field of law and society more broadly.”
