Curriculum

LLM in Media and Entertainment Law

To earn the LLM in Media and Entertainment Law you must complete 24 units of study. You must enroll in the three mandatory courses listed below, and complete at least 12 units in MEL coursework, including the mandatory courses, to earn the LLM in MEL degree. International students must also enroll in Introduction to the U.S. Legal System.

Mandatory Courses

You must successfully complete the following courses to receive the degree.

  • Entertainment Law (LAW-650)
  • Intellectual Property (LAW-772)

Electives

You may select from among the following elective courses in business and entertainment to complete the 24 units required for the degree. You may also enroll in other graduate level law courses to satisfy the elective requirements.

  • Business for Lawyers (LAW-632)
  • Contract Drafting, Negotiation and Analysis (LAW-708)
  • Counseling the Startup Company (LAW-827)
  • Dealmaking in the Entertainment Industry (LAW-816)
  • Employment Discrimination Law (LAW-635)
  • First Amendment (LAW-871)
  • Information Privacy Law (LAW-804)
  • Labor Law (LAW-636)
  • Legal Profession (LAW-505)
  • Music Law in Practice (LAW-653)
  • Negotiation Theory and Application (LAW-712)
  • Sports Law in Practice (LAW-718)
  • Taxation (LAW-600)
  • Television and Digital Media (LAW-654)
  • Topics in Entertainment Law (LAW-648)
  • Venture Capital and Emerging Companies (LAW-801)

Cinematic Arts Courses

Students may enroll in select courses offered by the School of Cinematic Arts. Enrollment is based on availability and is not guaranteed. Cinematic Arts courses do not count towards the minimum units required for the LLM in MEL, nor can they be used to satisfy bar requirements. Please note all CNTV courses must be taken for a letter grade.

  • The Television Industry: Networks, Cable and the Internet

Certificate Offerings

You may pursue our Business Law Certificate concurrent with your studies. Each certificate requires the completion of 12 units of law coursework specific to that certificate. This does not include classes offered outside of the law school. There are no additional tuition costs associated with the certificates. Students are limited to pursuing one certificate with their degree, and should refer to the materials provided by their academic advisors, as materials and requirements may be updated periodically.
