Professor Pocock's talk is based on his multi-volume series on Gibbon and the Enlightenment, the first two volumes of which have already been published by Cambridge University Press under the title Barbarism and Religion." His talk is based on his work for the third volume of the series, and is entitled "Lipsius and Harrington: the Problem of Arms in Ancient and Modern Monarchy."
