Why did you choose to pursue your degree at USC Gould?

I always knew I wanted to further my law studies in the United States. However, the decision of where to attend was uncertain. I applied to several schools, but the exceptional reception and willingness to help from USC Gould were key factors in my decision.

With its renowned reputation for producing top-tier legal professionals and unwavering commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive learning environment, USC Gould was the clear choice. The school’s exceptional faculty, rigorous curriculum and abundant opportunities for networking and professional development made it the perfect place to pursue my legal studies.

What sparked your interest in the law?

Law was not love at first sight for me. It was a journey of discovery and growth. Initially, societal pressures pushed me towards law, and I found myself struggling. However, once I realized that loving it was essential to my academic and career goals, my perspective shifted.

With renewed determination, I immersed myself, and my passion for law began to ignite. Growing up in an emerging economy, I witnessed firsthand the profound impact of laws and policies on a country’s development. This experience sparked my curiosity about the legal frameworks that govern international relations and economic cooperation, and I became eager to explore how law can be used to address global challenges and promote sustainable development.

Can you tell us about your current work in dispute resolution?

Growing up, I had a limited understanding of law, believing that litigation was the only path to justice. However, as I progressed in my career, I was introduced to the concept of dispute resolution. I was immediately drawn to the potential of alternative approaches to resolve conflicts more efficiently and cost-effectively.

Through my own experiences, I’ve seen firsthand the benefits of dispute resolution. I’ve successfully negotiated settlements, mediated complex disputes and represented clients in arbitration proceedings. I’ve found that a collaborative approach, focused on identifying common ground and working towards mutually beneficial solutions, is often the most effective way to resolve conflicts. This approach not only saves time and money, but also helps to preserve relationships and maintain business continuity.

What is the most memorable experience or learning from your USC studies?

One of the interesting experiences for me would be my Tuesday schedule during the fall semester. At the beginning of the day, I had swimming classes with just 15 minutes to get ready for my M&A class before I had to hurry to the bookstore for my shift. In between classes, I was also networking with classmates and professors. All of these required exceptional time management and organizational skills.

Another experience that I fondly remember involves walking past the track field and witnessing the athletes’ unwavering commitment to winning games. Their dedication and hard work sent a powerful message to me — that all of my practices and efforts are adding up towards something meaningful.

How has your degree from USC Gould given you an advantage in your career? What do you want to do next?

One of the most valuable lessons I learned during my time at USC Gould was the importance of understanding global interconnectedness. Living in a small unit of the world can create a limited perspective, but the reality is that our economies and policies are deeply intertwined with global events and trends.

The rigorous academic program at USC Gould provided me with a strong foundation in analytics and critical thinking, which are essential for navigating the complexities of the global marketplace. Additionally, the networking opportunities and connections I made have been invaluable in developing a grit for excellence and building a successful career.

What advice do you have for students who may be interested in following a similar path to yours?

Remember that the journey can be intense, but it’s important to find moments of peace and serenity within the school environment. Take time for yourself, practice mindfulness and connect with your classmates and professors.

Exploring the broader USC community can also be a great way to enrich your experience and make lasting connections. Don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone and interact with people from different backgrounds. Finally, remember to savor every moment. It’s easy to get caught up in worrying about the future, but it’s important to appreciate the present and make the most of your time at USC.
