As 3Ls anticipate commencement and a new career, their classmates are asking that they also make plans to maintain their ties to USC Law.

The 2007 Class Gift committee kicked off its campaign this week with a reception and dinner at the USC University Club. The students were joined by Dean Edward J. McCaffery and staff from the Office of Development and Graduate Relations.

The Class Gift program, introduced four years ago, is an opportunity for members of the Class of 2007 to contribute to the USC Law Annual Fund by supporting the law school programs they choose.

“The purpose of the Class Gift is to create a culture of giving in our class that will, hopefully, continue for years and years,” said Ryan Oliver, 3L class president, who co-chairs the Class Gift Committee with Reed Glyer, 3L vice president, and Yem Mai, Student Bar Association president. “It is also a signal to the law school community that we’ve appreciated our time here and that our class is dedicated to improving our alma mater.”

Gifts may be contributed to an unrestricted fund to support the operating and unanticipated expenses of running the law school, or can be designated to support the Class of 2007 Scholarship Fund, the Public Interest Law Foundation, the law library and technology, or student organizations, activities and programs.

Dean McCaffery speaks to the Class Gift committeeDean McCaffery suggested students make a show of support by pledging toward something they personally enjoyed in the last three years, whether it is USC Law’s pro bono clinics, the resources of the law library, or the assistance of a staff member.

“Give something — and that something that you give tells us and tells the donors that you care about the law school,” McCaffery said. “There’s strength in numbers, and there’s strength in showing solidarity for what we’re doing.”

The number of students pledging to the Class Gift program has improved each year — from 43 percent during the inaugural year to 86 percent with the Class of 2006. This year’s committee hopes to set a new standard by reaching 100 percent participation.

“I’m personally very excited about this spring’s class gift drive, and I’m sure that as we all think back on our last three years, every one of my classmates will be able to recall some experience at USC that will stir their philanthropic spirit and motivate them to give to the effort,” Oliver said.

To make a pledge by the April 30 deadline, contact a committee member or visit the Office of Development and Graduate Relations in Room 124.
