March 17 event features patent, trademark and copyright experts

The USC Gould School of Law is hosting the 2009 Intellectual Property Institute, featuring top legal experts and business people. The one-day conference March 17 will spotlight key issues in patent, copyright, trademark, trade secrets and related fields. The Institute will feature panel discussions on subjects ranging from Internet auction counterfeiters to design patents in the 21st Century.

David O. Carson, general counsel of the U.S. Copyright Office, and James A. Toupin, general counsel of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office will engage in an informal “fireside chat” keynote address during the 12:15 p.m. luncheon. They will discuss the nuts and bolts of practice and procedure, developing statutory and case law and possible changes under the new Obama administration.

Chief Administrative Law Judge Paul J. Luckern, Administrative Law Judge Sidney Harris (ret.), and Office of Unfair Import Investigations Supervisory Attorney T. Spence Chubb, will discuss Patent Litigation at the International Trade Commission (ITC) while Professors Mark A. Lemley, J. Thomas McCarthy, and David Nimmer will present An IP Year in Review.

The Institute will be held March 17, beginning at 7:30 a.m. at the Beverly Hills Hotel, 9641 Sunset Blvd., (310) 276-2251. Cost is $495 for the general public, $425 per person for groups of four or more from a single company, and $100 for full-time law students.
