USC Gould School of Law Professor Michael Simkovic has been appointed to the European Corporate Governance Institute (ECGI) as a research member. The ECGI is an international non-profit association that promotes debate and dialogue among academics, policymakers and business leaders, with aims to improve corporate governance, ESG and stewardship issues.

“I couldn’t be more honored to join this distinguished group of law scholars from across the globe,” Simkovic said. “I look forward to contributing to the organization’s mission and learning from my esteemed colleagues.”

Simkovic joins 74 other research members in this year’s cohort for work related to corporate governance. The professor’s research focuses on the intersection of law and finance, with an emphasis on credit markets, financial regulation and taxation. He and his fellow scholars went through a selection process overseen by a committee of renowned scholars, chaired by Professor Jens Dammann, Professor of Law at the University of Texas.

“ECGI is a unique network of researchers from around the world combining the best scholars from finance and law,” Dammann said. “These new appointments will bring additional insight and energy to an already thriving community. Their work will provide value for everyone following the latest corporate governance developments and we warmly welcome them to ECGI.”

With ECGI, Simkovic will be able to publish his work to the group’s Working Paper Series (Law and Finance) as well as distribute his work to the ECGI network. He previously had work published in leading journals including The University of Chicago Law Review, The Journal of Corporate Finance and the Journal of Legal Studies.

“Mike Simkovic’s selection to be a research member is a real honor and a true milestone in his career,” said Jordan Barry, the Vice Dean of Faculty and Academic Affairs at USC Gould. “Mike is a prolific and influential scholar, and I have no doubt that his work will continue to shape the law and finance field.”

Simkovic’s work in law and finance stretches beyond just research, as prior to joining the USC Gould faculty, Simkovic worked as an attorney at Davis Polk & Wardwell in New York and as a strategy consultant at McKinsey & Company, specializing in legal, regulatory and business issues affecting financial services companies.
