Saks' book chronicles struggle with schizophrenia

-By Gilien Silsby

Professor Elyn Saks will discuss her new book Tuesday, Sept. 11, from 12:30 to 1:20 p.m. in Room 3 of the law school.

Elyn Saks will discuss her book on Sept. 11 at the law schoolHer book, The Center Cannot Hold: My Journey Through Madness (Hyperion, 2007), publicly revealed Saks' struggle with schizophrenia and acute psychosis.

During the lunchtime event, Saks will also take questions from students, faculty and staff, and sign copies of the book, which has received favorable reviews in major newspapers and featured in People and Newsweek. She also has been interviewed on the National Public Radio programs "Fresh Air" and "Justice Talking."

Until now, only Saks’ closest friends knew of her condition, which she controls with daily therapy and medication.

“I wanted to write this book to give hope to people who suffer from schizophrenia and understanding to people who don’t,” said Saks, an expert in the field of mental health law who also holds faculty appointments at the Keck School of Medicine at USC and the psychiatry department at the UC San Diego School of Medicine. “I hope this story will help implode the myths that surround mental illness. And, honestly, it will be nice not to have this secret anymore.”
