Course Descriptions

Race, Social Media, and the Law LAW-787

This class explores the role of racial stratification in the development and regulation of social media. Through the lessons of Critical Race Theory, we will discuss the legacy of offline discrimination to understand their parallels in the digital space. By exploring social media’s role in upholding racial hierarchies, we will be better equipped to analyze and critique current self-regulatory and legislative efforts. In turn, we will develop arguments and frameworks for social media regulation that provide meaningful remedies, limitations, and disclosures that are necessary safeguards against the negative effects of race’s persistent role in American life.
