Registration, financial aid and counseling services open to all students

With the fall semester in full swing, the Office of Student Affairs staff wants students to know that they are ready, willing and equipped to help with any issue.

“This is the office that students can come to first,” said Gabi Ryan, director of student affairs and academic support. “We can send them somewhere else if we need to, but this can be a one-stop shop for students and student organizations.”

Starting this summer, student services at USC Law were consolidated to better assist all current students. Now, registration, financial aid, and academic and non-academic counseling all can be found in one office: Room 104.

Kyle Jones, registrar and director of student records, and Carla Golle, assistant registrar, handle registration, scheduling and petitions from current students.

Mary Bingham, director of financial aid, and Liam Gillen, assistant director of financial aid and student affairs, help students with any tuition-related questions, including those regarding scholarships or leaves of absence.

Ryan, along with Gillen and Assistant Director of Student Affairs Debra Barnett, offers non-academic counseling to students who are dealing with personal problems or family emergencies. Student Affairs plans and organizes related events for the student body, including the 2L advisor program and next week’s Bring Your Child to School Day. The office also advises the Student Bar Association and acts as a liaison between student organizations and other law school departments.

Ryan and Rosemary La Puma, assistant director of academic support, offer academic counseling to all students. This semester, they have also offered four academic support workshops for 1Ls, on topics such as outlining, case-reading and note-taking.

Other staff members who can be found in the student affairs suite include Associate Dean Rob Saltzman and Student Services Assistants Caroline Baron and Beverly Moore.

“Now that we’re in one office with an associate dean, there’s better communication between us and we can have a multi-faceted approach to student services,” Ryan said. “Many students come in for help with one thing, but also find they need help with another.”

Contact the Office of Student Affairs in Room 104 or at 213-740-6314. Office hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
