2026 Rothman Scholar
Originally from rural Northern California, Molly arrived in the Los Angeles area in 2016 to pursue her bachelor’s degree in philosophy, politics, and economics from Pitzer College. While finding her footing academically, drawing on the strengths of her nontraditional upbringing in Waldorf education, she was also finding her place in the male-dominated world of surfing. Her lifelong love of writing was her north star in both landscapes. Alongside her studies, she ventured into surf journalism and eventually launched her own project, Sea Maven Magazine, to meet the need for fresh perspectives in surf media.
Fortuitously, Sea Maven’s run coincided with, and contributed to, a meteoric rise in the credibility of women’s surfing. The decades-long fight for equal pay and equal professional opportunities, issues on which Sea Maven’s early coverage focused heavily, achieved major breakthroughs. Key players embraced Molly’s vision and opened doors, from intimate interviews with world champions to backstage passes at the most prestigious competitions in the sport. While managing and directing all aspects of the magazine behind the scenes, Molly was best known for generating authentic conversation with high-profile athletes — especially those whose interactions with media had not always been positive.
These interview skills traced directly back to Molly’s formative summer internship at the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia. There, under the supervision of attorneys and staff, she was responsible for field investigations often involving adverse witness statements, service of subpoenas, and other highly sensitive interactions. Inspired by the agency’s top-notch trial attorneys and moved by the potential for making a difference in the lives of clients, she set her sights on a career in the law, capping her undergraduate studies with a thesis on the rights of juvenile defendants. She graduated with honors in 2020. Before diving into law school, she went on to build professional experience in consulting and legal tech for six years while also bringing Sea Maven to its natural conclusion.
As an aspiring litigator, Molly intends to use her passion for storytelling to help clients achieve their goals, protect their rights, and navigate difficult situations. She is especially interested in issues involving creative ownership and freedom of speech. A proud first-generation law student and Trojan, Molly is deeply honored to represent Frank Rothman’s legacy of tenacity and civic-mindedness.
