Advanced Legal Writing Practicum (Spring 2019)

Course Description

This three-unit course is designed to give upper-division students advanced skills that are critical for effective legal writing, including the ability to (1) develop and analyze legal arguments so that they can be organized into coherent and cogent letters, contracts, and memos; (2) recognize and edit verbose writing; (3) recognize and rephrase ambiguous writing; and (4) subtly edit language to make it more persuasive.  The course focuses on written exercises and on drafting types of documents that were not covered in the first-year writing curriculum.

The course satisfies either the upper-division writing requirement or the upper-division skills requirement, whichever the student elects.

The course is graded numerically only.  Students will be graded on written assignments, class participation, and class attendance.  There will be no final examination.  Enrollment is limited to 12 students.
