Sovereign Debt (Spring 2017)

Course Description

Many if not most sovereigns issue debt to help finance their operations. This is true of nations, states and municipalities. Occasionally, the borrower finds itself in a position where it cannot pay back what it is owed. The last few years have seen a number of these situations. This course will examine these cases as well as the legal regimes that exist to address the problems that arise when a sovereign cannot pay back what it owes. Cases that we will look at include Argentina, Greece, Detroit and Puerto Rico.
