Course Description

Health law and policy continue to be at the forefront of the national discussion and health care continues as one of the most dynamic and shifting sectors of our economy. In this survey course we will explore the policy determinants, the ethical bases, and the legal regulations that govern our U.S. health care system. We will begin with an introduction to the fundamentals of health policy and explore the relationship between policy decision-making and our bioethical frameworks. We will then go into a detailed exploration of access to care, health financing, and quality of care along with a comparative analysis of health systems in other countries. We will continue with the provider-patient relationship and considerations on the structure and regulations of health care institutions. We will then consider liability and regulatory issues for providers, institutions, and other stakeholders such as insurance and pharmaceutical/biotech companies. We will end the course focusing on medical technology and the future of health care. Grading will be based upon class participation, an in-class presentation, and a final paper.
