Community Property (Spring 2019)

Course Description
This course will focus on the principles of California's community property system. The course will be dedicated to analyzing how assets and debts are characterized, valued and divided in proceedings for dissolution of marriage in California. We will discuss community property presumptions, "time of acquisition" rules, date of separation, apportionment, reimbursements and tracing, among other issues. Students will acquire a detailed understanding of California's community and separate property laws as set forth in the California Family Code. This course may be taken CR/D/F. There will be a final open book in-house examination. Students may use computers for the examination.
